What can cause hip pain and what do we treat?
-
Hip Osteoarthritis
Symptoms include groin pain, pain on the outside of the hip that can spread into the buttock. It might be stiff and often can be painful on waking in the morning, or with walking and other activities.
-
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (also called bursitis or tendinopathy)
Typical pain on the outside of your hip, often locally tender to touch and worsened by walking, lying on that side at night or sitting for long periods. It is caused by irritation and inflammation of the tendons and bursa on the hip.
-
Deep Gluteal Syndrome (sometimes called Piriformis syndrome)
This is a complex condition that often present as deep buttock pain that can be present with sitting, walking, crouching or exercise. It may be due to an irritated nerve but could also be a number of other structures in the buttock region that can become irrittable.
-
Referred pain from the lumbar spine
In rare cases, the pain in your hip might actually be coming from your low back. This requires a comprehensive assessment of both the low back and hip to establish if this is the case.
-
Femoral Acetabular Impingement (also known as hip impingement)
This is when your thigh bone or hip bone has a subtle difference in shape that can cause irritation with repeated activities like walking, running, crouching and often presents as groin pain that can spread over the outside of the hip or into the low back. Your hip might feel unstable or you might not trust it.
-
Muscle strain
Fast paced sporting movements or sudden slips or trips can put excessive strain on muscles, leading to pain, swelling or burising. You often get activity-related pain that dissapears at rest and will often have a specific event that you remember brought it on.
