Conditions We Treat With Physiotherapy for lower back pain

  • Persistent or recurring back pain

This is pain that sits across your lower back region, often around the belt region and may sometimes refer into the buttock region.

  • Lumbar radiculopathy which is commonly referred to as sciatica

This was previously referred to as sciatica. It involves irritation of one or more of the nerves in your lumbar spine that may be caused by a disc herniation. It commonly causes symptoms including leg pain, pins and needles, numbness, altered sensation or weakness of the leg.

  • Piriformis-related sciatica (buttock pain with referred symptoms)

This is often irritation of the nerve as it passes through the buttock region. It can give symptoms including deep buttock pain, that can refer into the upper back of the thigh. Often worsened with bending forward, sitting or squatting.

  • SI joint (SIJ) dysfunction (pain around the pelvis/low back)

In some cases low back pain may be caused by irritation of the sacroiliac joint and may be present in up to 25% of low back cases.

  • Facet joint pain (often worse with extension/standing)

Pain in the facet joint is typically related to extension and standing related movements and can be relieved with forward bending.

It is important to remember that the wider health of our body contributes to back pain, including the health of our immune system, our inflammation levels and sensitivity of our nervous system. Using our Three Pillars Framework, we work together to establish the causes of your back pain and a clear plan to get back to the activities that matter to you.
