Myles Whitbread-Jordan is a specialist musculoskeletal physiotherapist in the NHS and the face behind Tide Physiotherapy and Health. The approach to shoulder pain is informed by our Three Pillars approach, placing you at the centre of our care by ensuring you (1) understand your pain (2) have goal-directed exercise and movements and (3) have appropriate lifestyle and health coaching to look at wider factors that may be slowing your recovery from shoulder pain.

Our approach to shoulder physiotherapy rehabilitation

Our physiotherapy approach at Tide Physiotherapy and Health involves a comprehensive history of your shoulder pain, your understanding and concerns around your shoulder pain and any previous injuries. We not only look at your shoulder but also your neck and how both move during tasks or activities you have identified as being restricted. We work together to establish a personalised treatment plan and any whole-body health and lifestyle factors that may be slowing down your shoulder recovery.

Your rehabilitation plan is focused around what you want to get back to being able to do with your shoulder - what activities is your shoulder pain stopping you from doing and we build rehab around exercises and movements that get you back to being able to do those activities.

Common conditions that cause shoulder pain that we treat at Tide Physiotherapy and Health include:

  • Rotator cuff-related shoulder pain (previously known as shoulder impingement)

  • Referred shoulder pain that is coming from the neck (cervical spine)

  • Shoulder Osteoarthritis (also known as glenohumeral or acromioclavicular osteoarthritis)

  • Cervical radiculopathy (pain referred from nerves in the neck)

  • Shoulder dislocation following sport or falls

  • Frozen shoulder

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my shoulder pain go away over time?

Most people with shoulder pain experience relief of their symptoms over time but the timeframe varies extensively depending on the condition and factors influencing your pain.

Will I damage my shoulder doing exercise?

No. Most conditions that are treatable with physiotherapy respond well to exercise and improve the shoulder function and overall health. These include rotator cuff related shoulder pain, cervical radiculopathy, shoulder dislocation, osteoarthritis and repetitive overhead activities.

Do I need an x-ray or MRI to establish the cause of my shoulder pain?

In most cases no. With a comprehensive history taking and thorough examination of your shoulder, imaging is not indicated. In some cases, imaging can lead to prolonged recovery from shoulder pain. If imaging is needed, your physiotherapist will discuss with you why this is the case.

Will exercise help my shoulder pain recover?

Absolutely. Exercise for shoulder has consistently shown to improve pain and restore function better than no treatment across many shoulder conditions including rotator-cuff related shoulder pain, shoulder dislocation, cervical radicular pain and osteoarthritis.
